While we don’t like to postpone or cancel your scheduled charter, sometimes the weather on Lake Michigan makes it unsafe for us to venture out of the harbor. If it is necessary to postpone or cancel, below are the guidelines regarding rescheduling:

  1. There are no refunds due to bad weather. All charters shall be rescheduled in the event of bad weather.
  2. If there is an imminent threat of a thunderstorm, lightening, winds in excess of 25 kts, waves in excess of 5 feet or any other imminent weather event that may risk the safety of the passengers or crew, as determined by the Captain – we may postpone the scheduled charter and award you a rescheduling credit to be used at any other available time at no additional charge.
  3. We are always watching the radar and checking updated marine forecasts. Please use the weather links on our site to receive the same information. No one wants to sail in hazardous conditions. The safety of your party is our primary concern.
  4. Because weather changes rapidly on Lake Michigan, your Captain may contact you as late as 2 hours before your charter to advise you of the weather and charter status.
  5. Conditions that may warrant a charter cancellation may include, but are not limited to: Dense Fog Advisory/Warning, a Small Craft Advisory/Warning, Gale Warning – all these determined by the current NOAA forecast for Southern Lake Michigan. (see WEATHER LINKS)
  6. If the Captain cancels the charter due to weather, you will be awarded a full rescheduling credit for your amount paid toward another booking (including Fireworks and/or Chicago Air & Water Show Charters).
  7. If Salty Dog Sailing Co. has to cancel due to a mechanical or any other weather-related event, you shall be afforded a full credit of your full paid amount. (Salty has not lost a single day of service in 5 years due to a mechanical issue, keeping a stellar track record of service.)
  8. Reservations may be changed for any reason at least 7 days in advance of your charter. We shall provide you a credit to reschedule at any available time during the season at no additional charge.
  9. Reservations are non-refundable if cancelled with less than 7 days notice. If however, we are able to fill your slot, you will be awarded a credit to reschedule at a later time during the season.
  10. If your charter was purchased through a 3rd party reseller (such as Groupon or Living Social), any refund is subject to their refund policy and Salty Dog makes no warranty regarding their policy.
